Iranian President Pezeshkian claims foreign leaders exploited economic hardship to incite unrest, with rights group HRANA reporting over 6,500 deaths during protests, officials said.
- In a live state television broadcast, Pezeshkian said U.S., Israeli, and European leaders 'rode on our problems' to incite unrest, claiming `They brought them into the streets and wanted, as they said, to tear this country apart, to sow conflict and hatred among the people and create division`.'
- The two-week nationwide protests, which began in late December over soaring inflation and rising living costs, have largely subsided after a violent crackdown by Iran's clerical authorities.
- Rights groups and Iranian officials gave sharply different tolls, with U.S.-based rights group HRANA reporting at least 6,563 deaths including 6,170 protesters and 214 security forces, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said 3,100 people had died including 2,000 security forces.
- The United States imposed sanctions on Iran's interior minister Eskandar Momeni, IRGC officers, and investor Babak Morteza Zanjani, while a U.S. Navy destroyer docked at Eilat and a naval strike group remained in Middle Eastern waters.
- Amid military threats, regional states including Turkey, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia engage in diplomacy as Iran's Foreign Minister says missiles will never be negotiable.
