Iowa teenager killed in squirrel hunting accident, Iowa DNR says
Carson Ryan was mistakenly shot by a hunting companion while squirrel hunting, sparking widespread community support and raising over $40,000 for his family, authorities said.
- On Saturday, Carson Ryan, 17, of Washington, was shot while squirrel hunting in rural Brighton, roughly 15 minutes southwest of Washington, and later died.
- A news release from the DNR says the hunter mistook Ryan for game during a squirrel hunt at about 3 p.m. Saturday.
- Rushed to UI Health Care Medical Center, Ryan later died from his injuries; he was a senior at Washington High School and a varsity athlete on the homecoming court.
- The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said the shooting was accidental and investigators are probing the case, and nearly a dozen school districts across southeastern Iowa urged students and staff to wear orange and black on Monday, Sept. 29.
- Supporters have raised more than $52,600 on GoFundMe for Carson's family, and Main Street Washington posted that the community 'has suffered a loss.
