- Earlier this month, Sen. Jack Whitver, of Grimes, former Iowa Senate Majority Leader, said he would resign as leader while finishing his four-year term ending next year, citing family and health.
- Klimesh brings long local experience, having served 22 years as Spillville mayor and on the Winneshiek County Economic Development Board, and has held leadership roles in the Iowa Senate since 2023.
- With Republicans holding a 33-17 majority, Klimesh assumes agenda-setting control one seat shy of a supermajority, and Governor Kim Reynolds congratulated and endorsed him Wednesday.
- Looking ahead, Sen. Mike Klimesh said he will pursue tax cuts, lower barriers to work and investment, expand the economy, and improve schools, while Janice Weiner, Iowa Senate Democrats' Majority Leader, congratulated him and urged bipartisan cooperation.
