Ukraine scrambles for money to fight war as Russian strikes batter economy
Officials say $56 billion is needed to cover a budget gap as attacks cut tax revenue, exports and industrial output.
Ukrainian officials met European partners in Brussels last week to discuss accelerating €90 billion in European Commission loan disbursements to bridge a $56 billion budget gap this year.
Russian attacks on industry and logistics cost the government over $1.1 billion in revenue during the first nine months, as rising war costs compounded declining tax revenues.
Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, faces acute pressure after Russian missile strikes halted ArcelorMittal's mining and steelmaking operations last month.
Mayor Oleksandr Vilkul said Kryvyi Rih struggles to maintain essential services, noting, "In Kryvyi Rih, the situation is actually worse than anywhere else."
Daily fighting costs hit $190 million, prompting Roksolana Pidlasa, head of parliament's budget committee, to warn, "Expenditure will continue to rise" and urge Western allies to accelerate support.
