Inside the UK’s newest nuclear plant

  • Hinkley Point in Somerset is the first new nuclear plant built in Britain in a generation, expected to meet around 10% of electricity demand when it opens in 2030.
  • Delivery Director Simon Parsons stated civil construction teams have nearly completed Unit One's buildings and shifted focus to Unit Two. Teams are building the second unit 20% to 30% faster using "experience gained from building Unit One."
  • The fit-out phase involves installing 370 km of pipework and 10,400 km of cables. Workers are fitting 35,700 valves and 35,000 lights alongside large amounts of pumps and control equipment.
  • Simon Parsons introduced the reactor lid in Unit One, describing it as an "incredible piece of engineering." Footage shows the assembly of the Arabelle, the world's largest steam turbine, and ongoing fish protection work.
  • Adopting an industrial mindset, the site is scaling up processes that worked best during the initial phase. Parsons noted that while the transition was tough, teams are now gaining momentum fitting the massive equipment.
