Inflation eased further to 6.2% in July
- The Philippine inflation rate eased to 6.2 percent in July from 6.4 percent in June, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority report on Wednesday, driven mainly by transport inflation cooling to 11.9 percent.
- Slower fuel price increases helped temper pressures, with gasoline inflation decelerating to 34.1 percent from 39.2 percent and diesel easing to 38.6 percent from 39 percent, said John Paolo Rivera, senior research fellow at the Philippine Institute for Development Studies.
- The latest print fell below the 6.4-percent median estimate of 14 economists surveyed by the Inquirer, though average inflation from January to July remained elevated at 5 percent, well above the 3-percent target of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas .
- BSP Governor Eli Remolona Jr. said there is "little chance" of aggressive rate increases, while Chinabank indicated the central bank may end its rate-hiking cycle at its policy meeting on Aug. 27.
- Miguel Chanco, chief emerging Asia economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, expects the BSP to "pause" its tightening campaign this month, adding that the post-war resurgence in core inflation appears to have finally peaked.
