Infantino’s World Cup investment plan fallout reshapes the March FIFA vote
European federations are leading opposition as 49 members have publicly turned against him, while 87 federations have signaled support, AP tallied.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino faces a leadership challenge ahead of the March election following a backlash against his now-withdrawn plan to sell World Cup commercial rights to private investors.
Media reports detailed Infantino's talks with New York investor Josh Kushner to create a FIFA subsidiary running World Cup tournaments, prompting backlash from European leaders that forced him to drop the plan within four days.
As of Tuesday, 49 federations, mostly in Europe, have opposed Infantino, while all 10 South American CONMEBOL members have endorsed him and Africa remains a stronghold.
UEFA, backed by North American soccer body CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation, has promised to field at least one challenger before the November 18 deadline.
The issue is likely to be discussed as UEFA's 55 member federations meet in Berlin this week, amid long-time fears in global soccer politics of retribution for not backing the winner.
