Infant Formula Recalled because It May Contain Toxin Linked to Foodborne Illness
- On Saturday, May 2, the a2 Milk Company voluntarily recalled three batches of its a2 Platinum Premium Infant Formula for 0-12 month-olds after the Food and Drug Administration detected cereulide, a toxin produced by Bacillus cereus.
- The recall follows updated guidance from New Zealand's food regulatory authority, which prompted testing identifying the heat-stable toxin in the formula; hot water does not neutralize the contaminant.
- Of the 63,078 total containers produced, approximately 16,428 units were sold to consumers, including batches 2210269454, 2210324609, and 2210321712 with 'Use by' dates extending into 2027.
- While no illnesses have been reported, consumers should immediately stop using the formula and discard or return it, as ingestion can cause nausea and vomiting within 30 minutes to six hours.
- The product was distributed through the company's website, Amazon, and Meijer as part of Operation Fly Formula, though the formula had been discontinued and removed from sale before the recall.
