Indonesian president nominates acting head to lead central bank
Destry Damayanti is the sole nominee after Perry Warjiyo’s abrupt exit, and lawmakers have one month to approve the central bank leadership change.
- On Monday, Indonesia President Prabowo Subianto nominated acting central bank governor Destry Damayanti as the sole candidate to replace former governor Perry Warjiyo, the government announced.
- Destry would be the first woman to lead Bank Indonesia on a permanent basis, a nomination Radhika Rao of DBS expects markets will receive well given her extensive central bank experience.
- The 62-year-old economist worked at Citibank and Bank Mandiri and holds a master's degree from Cornell University. Chief economist Fakhrul Fulvian of Trimegah Sekuritas called her "a pragmatic and stability-oriented policymaker with a pro-growth nuance."
- While Destry maintains a strong working relationship with Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, Permata Bank Chief Economist Josua Pardede warned markets will draw a "sharp distinction between coordination and subordination."
- Parliament, controlled by Prabowo Subianto's coalition, has one month to approve the nomination as Bank Indonesia prepares for an August 18 to 19 policy review amid pressure to accelerate growth to 8%.
