Indonesia: Four Soldiers Arrested for Alleged Links to Acid Attack on Activist
Four officers from an intelligence unit face investigation for an acid attack on activist Andrie Yunus, who suffered serious burns to over 20% of his body, military police said.
- On March 12, Andrie Yunus, deputy coordinator of human rights group KontraS, was attacked with acid in Central Jakarta, and four officers from the Indonesian Armed Forces' intelligence unit have been arrested.
- Yunus had investigated last year’s protests and faced threats in recent months before the acid attack, according to KontraS, the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence.
- CCTV footage verified by Indonesian police shows Yunus screaming and ripping off his clothes after two riders on a motorcycle allegedly splashed liquid at him, causing burns to his hands, face, chest, and eyes covering more than 20% of his body.
- A presidential spokesperson said on Tuesday the president ordered an 'objective, open and expeditious investigation', and Major General Yusri Nuryanto stated four alleged suspects, the officers, are in custody and could face a military trial.
- Rights groups say the attack fits a pattern of intimidation with close to 700 organisations and individuals condemning it, including 26 from Australia.
