The death toll from floods and landslides on the Indonesian island of Sumatra has risen to more than 500, AFP reported today. At least 500 more people are missing and hundreds have been injured. Around 300,000 people have been left homeless, at least temporarily. Rescue workers are still struggling to reach some of the worst-hit areas.

Indonesia's disaster agency says floods and landslides triggered by monsoon rains in Sumatra have killed more than 440 people and are searching for hundreds more missing. The disaster has made large areas inaccessible and forced 290,000 people to flee. Rescue efforts and helicopters are continuing in the region, while floods have also caused widespread devastation in other parts of Southeast Asia, including Thailand and Malaysia.
