India's Rocket Launches Costliest Among Major Space Powers: Cambridge Study
While the global average launch cost in 2025 stood at $3,868 per kilogram, the US averaged $3,225 per kilogram, Japan $5,287, China $5,809, Russia $6,682 and Europe $9,897. India topped the list at $13,302 per kilogram.
Two foreign economists have revealed that India is the most expensive market among the six countries capable of launching rockets carrying satellites, and that it is here that the highest costs are incurred for rocket launches.
How Fast Are Space Launch Costs Falling?
In 1960, the average cost of sending one kilogram to low Earth orbit was $87,023 in 2024 dollars. By 2025, Alessio Terzi and Francesco Nicoli estimate that figure had fallen to $3,868, a decline of more than twentyfold. Their July 2026 PNAS Nexus study, From Sputnik to Starship: Estimating the Experience Curve of Space Launch Technology, assembles 4,405 launches covering more than 330 rocket configurations from 1960 through 2025. The dataset spa…
