- The ultimatum followed an investigation by The Indian Express revealing Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi formally objected at least 14 times over 10 months to decisions taken without their knowledge.
- Critics allege the Special Intensive Revision process deleted more than 130 million names across 30 states, calling it an illegal, manipulated scheme to disenfranchise voters aligned with opposition parties.
- Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Aam Aadmi Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal demanded Kumar's immediate arrest and removal, alleging his actions constitute "vote theft" and treason against India's Constitution.
- The Election Commission asserted all decisions were unanimous and legally sanctioned, while the Bharatiya Janata Party characterized internal differences as evidence of "pure democracy" rather than alleged autocracy.
