Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza adds another major award with Davey O’Brien as nation’s top QB

On Friday at ESPN's college awards show in Bristol, Conn., Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza won the Davey O'Brien Award and the Maxwell Award.
Driving the honors was a season that featured Mendoza leading the Indiana Hoosiers football program to a 13-0 record, a Big Ten championship, and the College Football Playoff top seed.
Beating fellow finalists, Mendoza prevailed over Ohio State freshman Julian Sayin and Texas A&M's Marcel Reed for the O'Brien and edged Sayin and Notre Dame's Jeremiyah Love for the Maxwell.
Ahead of Saturday, Mendoza is an overwhelming favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, which will be named in New York after he was named The Associated Press player of the year.
Historic milestones show that Mendoza is the first Indiana quarterback to win the O'Brien and Indiana's second Maxwell winner since Anthony Thompson, 1989, while the Hoosiers posted their first undefeated regular season since 1945.
