India to scrap boarding pass stamping for international flyers from Sept 1

  • Starting September 1, Indian airports will eliminate mandatory physical boarding pass stamping for international flights, requiring passengers to produce an e-boarding pass on smartphones for immigration clearance, the Bureau of Immigration announced on Saturday.
  • The BOI under the Ministry of Home Affairs initiated this change after finding physical stamping caused "inconvenience" to passengers; officials also cited frequent reports of "improper or incorrect" stamping errors.
  • While the stamping requirement ends, physical boarding passes remain acceptable for travel without the mark; the Central Industrial Security Force stopped stamping passes during frisking many years ago.
  • A pilot project for digital immigration entry and exit for Indian passport holders is currently underway, aligning with efforts to streamline airport procedures alongside the upcoming removal of mandatory boarding pass stamping.
  • In separate airport developments, regulator AERA slashed the user development fee at Bengaluru International Airport to Rs 300 for domestic passengers, an adjustment for the five-year control period through March 2031.
