The decline has taken place against the backdrop of the Iran war and its impact on LPG availability from the Gulf region. Before the war, the region accounted for around 90% of India's LPG imports.
LPG Import Shift to US: India has reduced its dependence on the Middle East by issuing a mega tender to import 2.75 million tonnes of LPG from the US by 2027. This joint initiative by IOC, BPCL, and HPCL will secure cooking gas supplies, strengthen energy security, and ensure uninterrupted LPG supply to domestic consumers amid tensions in West Asia.
India now sources most of its LPG from the US: Will the pressure on the fuel ease now?
Earlier India sourced 85–90% of its LPG imports from West Asia. But now the US is quickly becoming the dominant supplier of LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) of India. As the festive season approaches, the government will also be under pressure to cater to rising cooking gas requirement.
