Making Sense of DHRUV64 Indigenous Microprocessor
DHRUV64, developed by C-DAC under the Digital India RISC-V programme, supports strategic and commercial uses and aims to reduce reliance on imported processors.
- India announced Dhruv64, unveiling its first indigenous 1.0 GHz, 64-bit dual-core microprocessor designed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing under the Microprocessor Development Programme in DIR-V.
- To curb import reliance, India targets strategic and commercial users with Dhruv64, supporting a homegrown base as it accounts for nearly 20 per cent of global microprocessor production, the release said.
- Engineered for wide hardware integration, Dhruv64 supports low-cost prototyping and enables startups, researchers and industry to build across 5G networks, automotive systems, consumer electronics, industrial automation and Internet of Things .
- The rollout immediately accelerates development of Dhanush and Dhanush+ processors, strengthening the domestic chip design environment and expanding training for chip-design professionals supporting startups and industry.
- Building on prior projects such as SHAKTI and THEJAS64, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology guides programmes like DIR-V, Chips to Startup, and the India Semiconductor Mission to position India as a global electronics hub, the release said.
