India Joins Elite Club with Successful SFDR Technology Test

The test validated key subsystems and confirmed performance, marking India's entry into a select group with advanced long-range air-to-air missile propulsion technology.

  • On February 3, 2026, the Defence Research and Development Organisation successfully flight-tested Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet technology from the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur at around 10.45 a.m.
  • Developed by Defence Research & Development Laboratory , Hyderabad with Research Centre Imarat , Hyderabad and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory , Pune, SFDR is critical for long-range air-to-air missiles.
  • A ground-based booster accelerated the test vehicle to Mach, then the nozzle-less booster, ramjet motor and fuel flow controller met performance parameters while telemetry, radar and electro-optical tracking instruments confirmed success along the Bay of Bengal coastline.
  • With senior DRDO scientists present, officials called it a major milestone that strengthens India’s next-generation missile capabilities and can enhance the Indian Air Force’s operational strength.
  • With the successful test, India joins a small group with SFDR technology, intended for the Astra Mk-3 350 km-class missile, while the Astra Mk-2 is expected to exceed 200 km shortly.
