Cabinet Approves ₹1.86 Lakh Crore Green Energy Corridor to Evacuate 135GW Renewable Energy
The scheme will add 50 GWh of battery storage and support evacuation of up to 135 GW of renewable power, officials said.
- On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III scheme with an outlay of Rs 1.86 lakh crore to build transmission infrastructure for 135 GW of renewable power and deploy 50 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems.
- Expanding renewable generation requires shifting focus from capacity creation to transmission, storage, and supply infrastructure. This scheme supports India's transition toward ambitious non-fossil capacity targets by facilitating grid integration and power evacuation within States and Union Territories.
- Greenfield Intra-State Transmission Systems projects will use Tariff Based Competitive Bidding, while brownfield upgrades follow a Cost Plus Basis. The State Transmission Utilities will manage implementation, supported by Rs 54,082 crore in Central Financial Assistance to reduce power costs.
- Deploying Battery Energy Storage Systems at developer ends addresses grid intermittency and peak-hour curtailment across States and Union Territories. This infrastructure will generate direct and indirect employment in power, manufacturing, and construction industries while benefiting end users.
- The scheme is targeted for completion by 2032-33, contributing to India's long-term energy security and ecologically sustainable growth. It will also foster skilled employment in operation, maintenance, and grid management across participating States and Union Territories.
