In WV, federal shutdown triggers furloughs, closes Gorge visitor centers
As the federal government officially shut down on Oct. 1, 2025, a portion of the 26,200 federal employees living and working in West Virginia are soon expected to receive furlough notices. Parks are also affected by the shutdown, as visitors centers at New River Gorge, Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge and Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge were closed.
