US Navy Commissions Newest Virginia-Class Submarine USS Idaho

The submarine is the 26th Virginia-class boat and the eighth Block IV vessel, with longer maintenance intervals and more deployments, the Navy said.

  • On Saturday, April 25, the United States Navy commissioned the USS Idaho at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut, marking the 26th Virginia-class fast-attack submarine to join the fleet.
  • Although Idaho is landlocked, the state maintains deep naval ties through the Acoustic Research Detachment on Lake Pend Oreille, and this marks the fifth Navy vessel bearing the state's name.
  • Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao placed the 7,800-ton, 377-foot submarine into service, while sponsor Teresa Stackley issued the traditional order to "Man our ship and bring her to life."
  • Commanding Officer Cmdr. Chad J. Guillerault called the vessel a "legacy built before us that is being reborn today," and the submarine is now an active vessel in the United States Navy.
  • The USS Idaho is expected to begin its first deployment later this year or in early 2028, pending final shipyard fixes and crew certifications.
