Iran Hangs Two Anti-Government Protesters
The Supreme Court upheld the death sentences after authorities said the men took part in riots that killed four security personnel and damaged public property.
- On Wednesday, September 30, 2026, Iran executed Ali Hemmati and Majid Nik-Andish by hanging for their alleged roles in anti-government protests in Mashhad during January.
- The protests began in December over economic grievances before expanding into broader anti-government demonstrations that peaked in January in the northeastern city of Mashhad.
- Mizan Online reported the men were convicted of involvement in what authorities described as "the riots of January" and "inflicted extensive damage on public property" by setting fires to shops and banks.
- Iranian authorities claimed the unrest caused more than 3,000 deaths, attributing violence to "terrorist acts" orchestrated by the United States and Israel. Foreign-based NGOs dispute this, maintaining security forces fired on protesters.
- Since the protests, arrests and executions have multiplied across Iran. According to NGOs Iran Human Rights and Together Against the Death Penalty, the country executed at least 1,639 people in 2025, the highest since 1989.
