IHC Seeks Govt, Law Ministry Reports on Long-Pending Judges' Appointment Summary
The court sought an explanation after the Judicial Commission approved 24 appointments and confirmations that remain stalled across five high courts.
On Monday, the Islamabad High Court ordered the government to explain the delay in 24 judicial appointments, demanding written reports from the President, Prime Minister, and Ministry of Law and Justice by Tuesday.
President Asif Ali Zardari has yet to approve a summary for 24 judicial appointments recommended by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan in July, with 18 days elapsed beyond the 15-day constitutional period.
During Monday's hearing, petitioner's counsel Zahid Asif Chaudhry argued that Article 48 mandates the President act on the Prime Minister's advice, stating, "The president cannot keep the summary pending in this manner."
Government officials reportedly linked the impasse to dissatisfaction within the Pakistan Peoples Party over the Judicial Commission of Pakistan rejecting the party's preferred nominees for the Sindh High Court for failing to meet age requirements.
Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir expressed strong displeasure over the government's handling, noting the process stalled despite earlier approvals, and adjourned the hearing until Tuesday to await the required reports.
