Several members of the European Commission have said that the Union will back down from a plan to ban the sale of cars with combustion engines from 2035, according to the German newspaper Handelsblatt. The move came in response to a letter from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, in which he demanded that the EU take more account of highly efficient combustion engines.
The EU Commission should have presented its proposal on 10 December. Now this may not happen until next year.
