Beloved Humpback ‘Big Mama’ Returns to B.C. Waters From Hawaii
Pacific Whale Watch Association says the whale has returned almost every year for nearly three decades and has eight known calves.
- Iconic humpback whale 'Big Mama' returned to the Salish Sea on Monday, completing a roughly 3,000-mile migration from Hawaii. Pacific Whale Watch Association member company Maya's Legacy spotted her near Moresby Island.
- Hailed by the Pacific Whale Watch Association for sparking local recovery, Big Mama has returned almost every year since being photographed near Victoria by Mark Malleson, a Prince of Whales captain, in 1997.
- Big Mama has introduced eight known calves to the region, including her first calf 'Divot' photographed in 2003. The Pacific Whale Watch Association estimates her lineage now includes at least 20 whales.
- As more humpback whales return to Washington waters in coming months, the Pacific Whale Watch Association reminds boaters to maintain at least 100 metres distance—or 200 metres if whales are resting or with a calf.
- These whales will feed on small fish and crustaceans in the Salish Sea through the fall. NOAA Fisheries notes that humpbacks can live for 80 to 90 years, positioning Big Mama as a long-term recovery indicator.
