Cyclone Ditwah: Last Batch of over 100 Indians Evacuated From Sri Lanka Under Operation Sagar Bandhu
India evacuated 104 stranded nationals and expanded rescue and relief efforts in Sri Lanka after Cyclone Ditwah caused severe flooding and landslides, officials said.
- On Monday, India evacuated its last batch of stranded nationals from Sri Lanka under Operation Sagar Bandhu, flying 104 Indian passengers from Bandaranaike International Airport to Thiruvananthapuram at around 6.30 a.m.
- Cyclone Ditwah triggered widespread flooding, landslides and infrastructure collapse that isolated several districts, affecting 1,373,899 individuals from 382,651 families across 25 districts, the Disaster Management Centre reported.
- NDRF teams arrived yesterday in Colombo and carried out rescue operations in Kochikade, assisted nearly 800 stranded people in Puttalam, and evacuated a nine-month pregnant woman, while INS Vikrant and IAF helicopters airlifted survivors and air-dropped over 5.5 tonnes of relief.
- The rescue campaign has exacted a toll on personnel, with Sri Lanka Air Force confirming a pilot died after a Bell 212 helicopter crash and five sailors found dead, while five Air Force personnel remain in critical condition.
- The Indian High Commission said 'Operation Sagar Bandhu continues to stand by those who need it', as search operations persist in Badulla where NDRF recovered one deceased, and teams work in Puttalam and Badulla.
