Teacher accused of abusing and murdering adopted baby begged doctors to save him, court hears
Jurors heard the child suffered 40 injuries after months of alleged abuse and sexual assault while in the defendants’ care.
Jamie Varley and John McGowan-Fazackerley are on trial at Preston Crown Court, accused of the murder and abuse of 13-month-old Preston Davey. Varley, a former teacher, allegedly abused the child they were adopting before his 2023 death.
Preston Davey died on July 27, 2023, after Varley brought him to Blackpool Victoria Hospital unconscious in cardiac arrest. Although Varley told staff he left the child in a bath, doctors found the baby dry with no water in his lungs.
Dr Wendy Aubrey, a senior anaesthetist, testified that Varley was "dramatic" and "hysterical" during resuscitation efforts. Aubrey said Varley initially shouted "don't let him die!" before allegedly admitting, "I effing killed him."
A post-mortem examination identified 40 injuries on Preston Davey, who was allegedly routinely ill-treated and sexually abused during the four months under the couple's care. Both men deny all allegations, including cruelty and sexual assault.
Jurors were shown a video taken hours before the hospital visit where Varley bounced Preston on his grandmother's knee as she sang to him. The trial, which includes charges of distributing indecent images, resumes Wednesday morning.
