Hurricane Season Has Reached Its Peak And It’s Been Surprisingly Quiet

Thursday marks the climatological peak of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, yet the basin remains historically quiet with only five named storms and zero hurricanes formed so far.
Saharan dust and record-high wind shear across the Caribbean have hindered development, while a "very strong" El Niño has put the brakes on potential storm formation throughout the season.

If no hurricane forms by Friday, the 2026 season will set a new satellite-era record for the latest first hurricane, surpassing the previous record of Sept. 11 set in 2002 and 2013.
Despite the quiet start, roughly 60% of tropical activity typically occurs after Sept. 10; residents should remember that it only takes one storm to impact a home and prepare accordingly.
