Hawaii’s Western Islands Hit by Fierce Winds and Heavy Rain From Hurricane Lowell
The Category 2 storm could dump up to 24 inches of rain on Kauai and trigger flash flooding, mudslides and power outages, forecasters said.

- Governor Josh Green ordered state offices, public schools, and county offices on Kauai closed for Tuesday, Sept. 8; Mayor Derek Kawakami urged residents to shelter in place, calling the storm "too close for comfort."
- Lowell is expected to maintain its speed before turning northwest and weakening over the next couple days; the hurricane warning extends across the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, covering almost 583,000 square miles of ocean.
