The Sámi Truth Commission is a state investigative body established by the Swedish government in 2021.
The Truth Commission for the Sami People states that the state bears responsibility for historical injustices against the Sami, including through land loss, nomadic schools, forced displacement and discrimination.
MALÅ/ÖSTERSUND. The Swedish state has seized large amounts of Sami land and should apologize. This is what the Truth Commission has concluded after several years of work that is now being handed over to the government. – That is 400 years of injustice, says Lena Nyberg, chairwoman of the Truth Commission. Reindeer herder Jörgen Stenberg in Malå, however, is skeptical that there will be change.
