Humberto Strengthens Into Hurricane in the Atlantic, NHC Says

Hurricane Gabrielle is expected to bring up to 5 inches of rain and significant coastal flooding to the Azores while Tropical Storm Humberto strengthens in the Atlantic.

  • On September 25th, the Government of the Azores ordered closure of public services on the Western and Central groups from 6:00 p.m. September 25th to 6:00 p.m. September 26th.
  • IPMA data show Gabrielle about 2,640 kilometres west-southwest of the Western Azores group moving northeast, and meteorologist Rita Mota said `Cyclone Gabrielle is currently classified as a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale` with forecasts predicting weakening then restrengthening on Thursday and Friday.
  • From Thursday into Friday, Gabrielle may bring up to 5 inches of rain across the central and western groups while swells affect Bermuda, the U.S. East Coast from North Carolina northward, and Atlantic Canada.
  • Effective Thursday night, the Azores will be under red warnings for heavy rain, wind and rough seas, but closures exclude hospitals, health centers and Civil Protection services, and Bolieiro urged residents to follow official communications.
  • After becoming post-tropical on Friday morning, Hurricane Gabrielle is expected to continue east, weaken to a tropical storm by Sunday, and approach mainland Portugal.
