Huge update after car plunges into river
On Wednesday at 1:15 am, an Audi plunged into a weir at Audley Weir in the Royal National Park, Sydney; the driver escaped, but his 20-year-old passenger, Muhammad Kashif, was unable to free himself and died.
Police allege the Audi driver and the driver of a Mercedes were drag racing down Audley Road, leading to charges including dangerous driving occasioning death for the Audi driver.
Mal Lanyon told 2GB on Thursday morning that drag racing is "definitely part of the investigation," while police divers located Kashif's body at 10:20 am Wednesday and recovered the vehicle for forensic examination.
The Mount Pritchard Southern Districts Cricket Club paid tribute to Kashif, describing the student as full of "charisma" and "banter," while both men remain on conditional bail appearing at Sutherland Local Court on June 18.
Specialist crash investigation officers are preparing a report for the coroner, while both the Audi driver and the 18-year-old Mercedes driver underwent mandatory drug and alcohol testing at hospital.
