Major Incident Declared in Widnes as Plume of Smoke Seen for Miles Around
Crews from Cheshire, Lancashire and Greater Manchester are battling 700 tonnes of waste cardboard, and officials said nearby residents should keep windows closed.
On Monday, June 22, 2026, a large fire broke out at a recycling facility on Everite Road in Widnes, prompting officials to declare a "major incident" as thick black smoke billowed for miles.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service deployed around 20 fire engines from across Cheshire, Greater Manchester, and Lancashire to combat the blaze involving 700 tonnes of waste cardboard in a single-storey building.
The single-storey building measures approximately 50m by 50m; crews are utilizing a foam tanker and high-volume pump, while officials confirmed all persons are accounted for with no casualties reported.
Cheshire Police implemented road closures on Everite Road, Hale Road, and Ditchfield Road, while residents are urged to keep windows and doors closed to prevent smoke inhalation.
Crews continue to tackle the fire as of Monday evening, and the advice for residents and businesses to maintain window and door closures remains in place pending further updates.
