'Commonly Ignored' Google Maps Feature Experts Say Can Slash £100 Off Fuel Bills

The feature calculates routes using traffic, road conditions, and vehicle type, cutting fuel consumption by 9%, potentially saving £108 annually on a £1,200 fuel bill.

  • This week, millions of UK drivers were told about Google Maps 'prefer fuel-efficient routes' feature, which can reportedly save more than £100 annually on fuel.
  • The feature uses real-time traffic data, road conditions and your vehicle type, including motorbikes and electric cars, while a study found eco-paths cut fuel use by 9% but take 9% longer.
  • Graham Conway explained: 'All you have to do to take advantage of it is to enter your destination into the app and choose ‘directions’, then look for the three small vertical dots in the top right-hand corner of the screen. Select ‘options’ and then look for the ‘prefer fuel-efficient routes’ toggle, which you can switch on by moving to the right.'
  • The Gov.uk website warns drivers it is illegal to hold or use a device while driving, with penalties of 6 points and a £200 fine; Conway advised to 'plan your journey before you set off' and use voice prompts.
  • Given pump prices high, the average diesel price is about 160.3p per litre and petrol about 141.5p, and the software 'will use a selection of specific data... being kind to the planet'.
