No mayor of a major city in Metro Vancouver has ever served longer than Brodie, who was first elected to Richmond's top job in a 2001 byelection. He never received less than 60 per cent of the vote, rarely found himself in political hot water, and in an era of increasing partisanship, served as an Independent.
