Canadians are marking the 30th National Indigenous Peoples Day on Sunday with events nationwide, honoring the histories and contributions of First Nations and Inuit people.
Culminating Indigenous Peoples Month, the holiday—formerly National Aboriginal Day—was proclaimed in 1996 by Gov. Gen. Romeo LeBlanc after years of advocacy from Indigenous groups.
In Ottawa, Gov. Gen. Louise Arbour marks the 25th anniversary of the National Aboriginal Veterans Monument with Aboriginal Veterans Autochtones, while Indigenous Services Minister Mandy Gull-Masty attends the Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival.
Prime Minister Mark Carney visits an exhibit on Snuneymuxw culture at the Nanaimo Museum today, while The Forks in Winnipeg hosts the Wahkohtowin Powwow and Moncton's Bore Park features cultural celebrations.
The City of Toronto hosts a morning ceremony at Biidaasige Park, and POP Montreal features performances by the Manitou Singers. Communities in Nova Scotia are holding barbecues and fireworks to mark the occasion.
