House panel quashes attempt to stop integration of US, Israel defense tech sectors
The measure would add a Pentagon liaison and expand joint work on 10 defense technology areas, including artificial intelligence and cyber defense, lawmakers said.
- On Thursday, the House Armed Services Committee advanced the fiscal 2027 National Defense Authorization Act, which includes Section 224, the United States-Israel Defense Technology Cooperation Initiative, to codify military technical cooperation between the two nations.
- Proponents designed the measure to transition Israel away from military aid dependence toward a co-production model, mirroring goals expressed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the Obama-era Memorandum of Understanding expires in 2028.
- The initiative would install a Pentagon executive agent to oversee joint efforts in areas including artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and cyber defense, aiming to "promote the long-term integration of joint capabilities between the United States and Israel."
- Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., introduced an amendment to strike the proposal, arguing Americans want "less cooperation and blank checks," but the committee rejected his effort after members touted Israeli technology benefits for U.S. weapons systems.
- In mid-July, the National Defense Authorization Act moves to the full House for a vote, where Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie pledged to "offer an amendment to strip it from the bill on the floor.
