House panel advances kids online safety bills

  • On Dec 10, Apple CEO Tim Cook met House Energy and Commerce Committee members on Capitol Hill to oppose the App Store Accountability Act, urging Congress to let parents decide if apps collect children’s age data.
  • The App Store Accountability Act is intended to keep minors from harmful content and requires age verification and parental consent, with similar measures in Texas's SB2420, Utah earlier this year, and Australia's under-16 social media ban.
  • To head off legislation, Apple Inc. proposed privacy-forward options including parental tools, new age categories, and the Declared Age Range API, Ware said.
  • Mr. Cook met House Energy and Commerce Committee members on Dec 10; Texas already enacted a law requiring parental consent for users below 18, effective January 1, 2026.
  • A 2023 Pew Research poll found 81 support for parental consent and 71 for age verification, with Apple emphasizing that age data should not be retained by app stores or developers.
