Boston Hotels See Bookings Fall Below Expectations Ahead of World Cup
AHLA said 80% of host-city hotels are booking below forecasts as FIFA room cancellations and visa barriers limit demand.
On Monday, the American Hotel & Lodging Association released the FIFA World Cup 2026 Hotel Outlook, reporting that hotel demand across most U.S. host markets is tracking below expectations despite more than 5 million tickets sold.
Hotels initially reserved large volumes of inventory for FIFA, creating an "artificial early demand signal" that has since recalibrated, while visa barriers and geopolitical concerns are suppressing international travel interest.
Data reveals distinct regional disparities: approximately 80% of respondents report bookings tracking below forecasts, with Kansas City particularly impacted, while Miami and Atlanta show roughly 55% and 50% of properties reporting stronger-than-expected projections.
Facing fragmented demand, many operators are recalibrating strategies or pausing investments in World Cup-specific activations; meanwhile, White House spokesman Davis Ingle stated the tournament "will no doubt be one of the greatest" events in history.
Despite current softness, report data indicates "meaningful opportunity ahead" if the United States ensures a seamless visitor experience, as Kansas City remains a trending summer destination per Google Flight data.
