Remains of Foetus Discovered Next to River as Lancashire Police Launch Investigation
Police are trying to identify the mother and determine how the foetus came to be there, while forensic enquiries continue.
Lancashire Police launched an investigation on Tuesday after the remains of a foetus were discovered near Hodder Bridge in Stonyhurst at 3:13 p.m. Officers cordoned off the area near the River Hodder as forensic inquiries began.
Initially believed to be a placenta, the bag was later confirmed to contain foetal remains. Police do not believe the foetus was full term, but continue enquiries to establish gestational age.
Detectives are appealing for anyone in the area between Sunday, August 9, and Tuesday, August 11, to contact them, particularly a man spotted in the vicinity with two children between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Detective Chief Inspector Jill Vescovi of the Force Major Investigation Team expressed serious concern for the mother's wellbeing, stating, "I know that she must have been through something horrific, and she may be frightened about coming forward."
Anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting log 864 of August 11. Vescovi added, "If you know anything, no matter how insignificant you may think it is, please get in touch with us.
The remains of a fetus have been found in a bag on a riverbank in England. Police are urgently searching for the mother, who may need medical attention.
