Massive Hoover Dam Flag Removed Just Weeks Before America's 250th Anniversary
The nightly light show will continue without the flag while crews repair the tear, and officials gave no estimate for its return.
The Bureau of Reclamation removed the 150-foot-by-300-foot American flag from the Hoover Dam on Tuesday, June 9, after identifying an "unexpected tear" in the massive display.
Unveiled on Memorial Day, the massive flag served as a centerpiece for the America250 celebration, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the country.
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority invested $55,000 in the original flag and allocated $35,000 for sewing and modifications to repair the damage.
Although the flag is down, the nightly LED light show at the Hoover Dam will continue as scheduled through July 4, according to officials.
Online responses have been generally supportive regarding the flag's return, with one Facebook user joking, "Where's Betsy Ross when you need her?" referencing the flag's designer.
