CoinEx to Shut Down Exchange After Nearly Nine Years
On Tuesday, CoinEx announced a staged shutdown beginning immediately and fully ceasing operations December 22, 2026, citing prolonged market downturn, contracting trading volume and liquidity, and rising regulatory compliance costs.
CoinEx CEO Haipo Yang stated the exchange faced mounting security and compliance risks that became increasingly difficult to contain, joining BitMart, BitMEX and AscendEX in shutting down this year amid market pressures.
Spot trading ends September 29 with non-USDT assets converted to USDT or withdrawn; futures positions must be reduced by September 22 when remaining contracts face forced settlement; withdrawals close December 22 at 02:00 UTC.
CoinEx assured users that balances remain fully backed with reserves exceeding 100% verified through its proof-of-reserves system, while CoinEx Wallet and Vault continue operating independently and CET tokens are repurchased at 0.005 USDT through September 29.
Prior scrutiny included a June 2026 Wall Street Journal report linking $3.84 billion to Iran-related entities, which CoinEx disputed; a September 2023 breach attributed to North Korea's Lazarus Group cost $70 million; and a 2023 New York settlement required $1,172,971.50 in refunds to 4,691 investors with claims due by August 22, 2028.
