Homes evacuated within 400m of suspected WW2 ordnance
Royal Navy bomb disposal specialists are assessing the device as council crews move about 1,260 households to safety.
Emergency services responded on Wednesday, April 29, to a suspected World War II bomb discovered at a Southway building site, prompting the evacuation of over 1,200 homes.
Following advice from the Royal Navy Explosives Ordnance Disposal Team, authorities expanded the safety cordon around Flamborough Road from 100m to 400m to allow specialist teams to work safely.
Discovery Multi Academy Trust closed Oakwood Primary School and Beechwood Primary Academy on Thursday, April 30, due to the exclusion zone, while public transport services remain impacted.
Plymouth City Council established an evacuation center at Southway Youth and Community Centre, where staff supported more than 50 residents and placed around 25 households in temporary accommodation.
Inspector Gareth Hammett stated teams must "tread really carefully" given the device's viability, and authorities acknowledged the duration of the evacuation and cordon remains unknown.
In the Alfter-Nord industrial area, near Alanus University, a bomb from World War II was discovered during construction work on Thursday. The danger area was closed and evacuated in the afternoon.
The area affected will be sealed off and evacuated within a radius of approximately 200 meters during the operation. The suspected explosive device was found in the Infopark area.
