HHS Accelerates Shift To Human-Based Research, Reduces Animal Testing
NIH is investing more than $88 million and FDA is updating rules as agencies add human organoids, AI and other alternatives.
- On Monday, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced agency-wide actions to accelerate the shift toward human-based research methods, expanding more than 20 programs launched under President Trump to reduce animal testing.
- Kennedy stated the department is moving toward a new era of biomedical research that centers on human biology, with NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya noting the institute is building infrastructure to better reflect human biology.
- The National Institutes announced more than $88 million for biomedical infrastructure projects, while The Food and Drug Administration issued a rule implementing the FDA Modernization Act to modernize regulatory frameworks.
- CDC Director Erica Schwartz said the agency is reducing its laboratory animal colony and conducting more than a dozen studies using new methods, aiming to spare hundreds of nonhuman primates and more than one million horseshoe crabs annually.
- Director Alicia Jackson said The Advanced Research Projects Agency is investing in artificial intelligence through its CATALYST program to predict drug safety and reduce preclinical animal testing while recruiting grant reviewers with human-based science expertise.
