Baby Goats Test Positive for Rabies at North Carolina Mobile Petting Zoo
Three baby goats tested positive and a fourth was euthanized, while health officials said they are working to provide rabies shots to anyone exposed.
- North Carolina health officials announced Friday that baby goats from Farm Adventures, a mobile petting zoo, tested positive for rabies. The unvaccinated animals potentially exposed the public to the fatal virus at events across the state from July 28 through Aug. 23.
- According to the owners, the goats were too young for rabies vaccinations. The animals appear to have been infected after a skunk entered their pen, an incident Farm Adventures described as "distressing" in a social media post.
- Featured at events including birthday parties and a "back-to-school bash," the goats also visited a dinosaur exhibit in Mocksville on Aug. 15. State officials are working to identify and contact potentially exposed individuals across multiple counties.
- Rebecca Lanning of Marion received a notification last Friday that her 4-year-old son had been exposed during a family outing. The boy has begun rabies vaccine shots to prevent the disease, which is nearly 100% fatal once symptoms emerge.
- Rabies outbreaks are rising across the U.S., with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting that 1.4 million Americans are monitored for exposure annually. About 100,000 individuals receive post-exposure prophylaxis shots each year to prevent infection.
