The increase in inflation in January was mainly influenced by the abolition of the value-added tax (VAT) exemption for district heating, as well as changes to other taxes, economists say. According to Luminor Bank economist Žygimantas Mauricas, the impact of heat prices on energy prices is the largest in Lithuania - greater than that of electricity or natural gas.
Due to severe cold and the value-added tax (VAT) exemption that was abolished from January, district heating bills for January will be 85–90% higher compared to bills for December, says Valdas Lukoševičius, head of the Lithuanian Heat Suppliers Association.
