Vuelta Stage 15 Shortened Due to Extreme Heat, Mas Consolidates Lead
Organisers said the extreme weather protocol protects rider health as temperatures near 40C are forecast and the route drops from 189.7 km to 110.2 km.
- On Saturday, Vuelta a Espana organisers Unipublic announced shortening Sunday's stage 15 route from Palma del Rio to Cordoba by around 80 kilometres, following activation of the Extreme Temperatures Protocol.
- Organisers amended the route as temperatures across Andalucia are forecast to reach 40C on Sunday, mirroring measures taken during July's Tour de France after an "exceptionally intense heatwave."
- The 15th stage was originally planned as a 189.7km route featuring 3,500m of vertical ascent but has been cut to 110.2km, significantly reducing climbing as riders head toward Cordoba.
- With the stage shortened, the race will roll out at 2:50 p.m. local time with racing starting 10 minutes later, following the original route until kilometre 52 before turning toward Cordoba.
- Team Movistar rider Enric Mas leads the Vuelta by 2min 06sec over Felix Gall, with Primoz Roglic just four seconds back in the general classification battle.
