Veterinarians said many of the animals had inflamed paws and scarring consistent with organized dogfighting, and no arrests have been made.
On Tuesday, Berkeley County deputies rescued over 40 dogs and puppies from an alleged dogfighting operation in South Carolina, finding animals chained in stagnant water and 5 puppies confined in hutches.
The Berkeley County Sheriff led the operation with assistance from Humane World and the Charleston Animal Society, collaborating to address the alleged dogfighting site.
Veterinarians noted many dogs suffered from inflamed paws caused by standing in waste-contaminated water for weeks, with scarring on faces and legs consistent with organized dogfighting.
Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis stated, "This investigation is a powerful example of what can be accomplished when law enforcement and animal welfare organizations work together," though no arrests have been made.
Since June 2025, Humane World has assisted law enforcement in rescuing over 250 dogs across 15 properties in South Carolina, Indiana, and Florida, with rescued animals now in safe locations receiving care.
