On Wednesday, Israeli passenger Yaniv Hayun and three others subdued the co-pilot of FlyDubai flight FZ1073, with Hayun manually stabilizing the Boeing 737 to prevent a crash during the emergency flight to Saudi Arabia.
Hayun later told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu he knew how to stabilize the aircraft because he watches "Air Crash Investigation," after a woman screamed "stabbing" and the plane shook.
Captain Smit Machchhar remains in stable condition at a hospital in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, while Israeli President Isaac Herzog nominated Hayun, Tzvika Manes, his wife Tali, and Dr. Shota Musaev for the Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism.
Passenger Asaf Rajuan, also nominated for the award, stated, "It's something you do without thinking, running to save your daughter's life," as a second air crew helped land the plane safely.
"Mayday" executive producer Alex Bystram said the show airs in 175 countries and aims to dispel aviation mysteries, calling the captain's actions "remarkable" despite the program being "far from a teaching tool on how to fly.
