Women’s Basketball Player From Senegal Has Deportation Order Rescinded After Arrest by ICE
An immigration judge said Seck did not receive notice of earlier proceedings, and her hearing is set for Nov. 26 while she remains in ICE custody.
An immigration judge granted a motion on Wednesday to reopen the immigration proceedings of Kentucky State University basketball player Aminata Seck, rescinding her prior deportation order.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained the 26-year-old Senegal native on Aug. 7 at Muhammad Ali International Airport, claiming she "chose to overstay her welcome in violation of our nation's laws."
Attorney Hishem Alsalman stated the judge found Seck never received notice of prior proceedings and noted she requires treatment for seizures and a torn knee ligament, calling detention "unlawful and unnecessary."
Seck remains in ICE custody pending removal proceedings, the Department of Homeland Security wrote on Thursday, with a hearing scheduled for Nov. 26 to present her case.
The 6-foot-4 center was named to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference Third Team last season and received the SIAC Women's Basketball Elite 16 award for exemplary academic and athletic performance.
